A Liturgy from the Sermon on the Mount

Facilitator in plain text All in bold

Welcome, everyone.
Here we will follow a brief liturgy inspired by the Sermon on the Mount and the teachings of Jesus.

Peace be with you

Peace be with you

1

The Kingdom of Heaven
Is not here nor there

It is among you
It is within you

The Kingdom of Heaven
Is here

The Kingdom is here

Love is the door

Love is the door

We are opening the door

We are opening the door

2

You are the Light of the World

You are the Light of the World

A city on a hill cannot be hidden

Neither do you light a lamp and put it under a basket
But on a stand

Let your light shine

Let your light shine

Reflect your Father in Heaven

Reflect your Father in Heaven

The Source of all Light

The Source of all Light

3

Our Father's law is Love
Written on every heart

Not to destroy
But to fulfil

The Law is Love

The Law is Love

Love one another

Love one another

4

Let your yes be yes

Let your yes be yes

Let your no be no

Let your no be no

It begins in the heart

It begins in the heart

You have heard it said
Love your neighbor and hate your enemy

But I tell you
Love your enemies
Pray for those who persecute you

It begins in the heart

Love your enemies

5

Give in secret

Give in secret

Your Father sees in secret
And will reward you openly

Your Father knows
What you need
Before you ask him

Pray in secret

Pray in secret

Give in secret

Give in secret

6

Pray like this

Our Father in Heaven
May your name be kept holy

Let your Kingdom come
Let your will be done
As in Heaven
So on earth

Give us today our daily bread

Forgive us our debts
As we also forgive our debtors

Bring us not into temptation
But deliver us from the evil one

Our Father in Heaven
May your name be kept holy

Let your Kingdom come
Let your will be done

Yours is the Kingdom,
The power,
And the glory forever
Amen

7

Where your treasure is
There your heart will be also

Where your treasure is
There your heart will be also

Lay up treasure in Heaven

Lay up treasure in Heaven

So where is your treasure?
Where is your heart?

(Pause for a moment to reflect)

8

Consider the lilies

Consider the lilies of the field

How they grow
They don't toil
Neither do they spin

Yet I tell you
That even Solomon in all his glory
Was not dressed
Like one of these

See the birds of the sky

See the birds of the sky

Your Heavenly Father feeds them

Your Heavenly Father feeds them

Aren't you of much more value than they?

Don't be anxious

Don't be anxious

Your Heavenly Father knows

Your Heavenly Father knows

Seek first God's Kingdom
And his righteousness

And all these things
Will be given to you

9

Do not judge
So that you won't be judged

Do not judge
So that you won't be judged

With whatever judgment you judge
You will be judged

With whatever measure you measure
It will be measured to you

First remove the beam
From your own eye

First remove the beam
From your own eye

Then you can see clearly
To help your neighbor

Then you can see clearly
To help your neighbor

10

Ask
And it will be given you

Ask
And it will be given you

Seek
And you will find

Seek
And you will find

Knock
And it will be opened for you

Knock
And it will be opened for you

For everyone who asks

Receives

Everyone who seeks

Finds

And to everyone who knocks

It will be opened

Therefore
Whatever you desire for others to do to you
You shall also do to them

For this is the law
And the prophets

Ask
Seek
Knock

Let us pause and take a moment to share and to listen.

(Time of sharing and listening; take what you like, and leave the rest)

Where two or three are gathered together in my name

There am I in the midst of them

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden

And I will give you rest

11

Enter by the narrow gate

Enter by the narrow gate

The way that leads to life

The way that leads to life

By their fruits you will know them

By their fruits you will know them

A good tree bears good fruit

A good tree bears good fruit

12

Everyone who hears these words
And does them
Is like a wise man
Who built his house on a rock

Built his house on a rock

The rain came down
The floods came
The winds blew and beat on that house
And it didn't fall

For it was founded on the rock

Founded on the rock

May we hear these words and do them

Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it

Candle for peace

We now will end our time of gathering by lighting a candle with a prayer for peace.

Blessed are the peacemakers
For they shall be called sons and daughters of God

(The candle is lit. We silently read the Beatitudes.)

Blessed are the poor in spirit
For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven

Blessed are those who mourn
For they shall be comforted

Blessed are the meek
For they shall inherit the earth

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness
For they shall be filled

Blessed are the merciful
For they shall obtain mercy

Blessed are the pure in heart
For they shall see God

Blessed are the peacemakers
For they shall be called sons and daughters of God

Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness' sake
For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven

Peace be with you

Peace be with you
